They send out their adjuster, and they look at the car. They estimate the repair cost and compare that to the NADA or Blue Book value. If the repair cost is X% of the total value, they will declare it a total loss. I'm not sure what their ratio is, but it doesn't have to equal 100% of value. If they declare it a total loss, you have the option to buy the car back from them, for a low cost. I would suggest doing that. You can also argue their value they say your car is worth. They will lowball you, that's their job. If you have receipts and proof of maintenance, that can only help your case. I'd contact an attorney immediately due to the personal injury suffered by your GF. Mileage will be your biggest enemy, but if the car was very clean, and well maintained, you should be able to argue them up to about $9k. You won’t get much money for aftermarket parts. But things like alarms, airbags (1990, sorry) and premium sound add value.
